Born 1946 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau, Bonn, and Paris (Sorbonne); Assistant to the Chair for private law (Prof. Dr. Bauer) of the University of Bonn; Dr. jur. 1973 (University of Bonn).
Since 1975: Rechtsanwalt; Partner at SCHMITZ KNOTH. Since 1985: Judge at the Court of First Instance for law governing lawyers in Cologne; then Judge at the Court of Appeal for law governing lawyers in Hamm; since 1996 until 2013: Associate Justice at the Federal Supreme Court in Karlsruhe (chamber for law governing lawyers). Until 2016: Fachanwalt for Intellectual Property law and member of the pre-decision committee of the Cologne Bar Association (Rechtsanwaltskammer Köln).
